With the advances in technology, it is now possible for anyone to become an Indie author and publish a book. Gone are the days when we had to send manuscripts to publishers, only to be at their mercy every step of the publishing way.

What is an Indie Author?

Indie is the short form of the word independent. Okay, I agree. If you haven’t published a book yet, you’re a writer, not an author. But in my eyes, once you have resolved to write that book and publish it, you’re an author.

So an Indie Author is any person who is going to independently publish a book.

Why would I publish my own book?

People have different reasons for wanting to publish their own book. Maybe you are like me: hard-headed and always wanting to do things my own way.

Maybe you wrote a manuscript but the big publishing houses send you rejection letter after rejection letter. If you still believe that your manuscript is worth publishing, then it is time for you to become an Indie Author.

JK Rowling was told by one of the biggest publishing houses in the world that her first Harry Potter book is not worth publishing. Yes, even the famous JK Rowling got some of those dreaded rejection letters! But she believed in herself and she believed in her book. And we all know what happened to her!

How difficult is it to publish your own book?

Publishing your own manuscript is a lot easier than you ever thought. If you have a computer with a Microsoft Office Word program on it (or any other kind of word processor), then you can publish your own book.

Being an Indie Author involves the following:

• Writing the manuscript
• Proofreading your manuscript
• Designing a cover
• Submitting your manuscript and cover
• Ordering a proof copy of your book
• Proofreading your proof copy
• Publishing your book
• Marketing, marketing, marketing

I know it sounds like a lot of work. I’m not going to lie to you. It is more work than you can imagine. But this is why I believe in Indie Authors: anyone with the grit and stamina to take control of the publishing of their own manuscript, is a winner in my book.
